A commitment ceremony is a personal moment where a formal declaration of love is made in front of family and friends. It is a day that will be held in the heart forever. Meeting a partner is not by pure chance. Destiny intervened.
Same sex commitments hold no less an impact on someone's life as does a heterosexual marriage. Hopefully the commitment, love and devotion will withstand time as could your gift. A gift of jewelry can demonstrate the closeness you have to a couple and it must be selected purposefully based on your knowledge of them.
Some ceremonies for same sex couples shy away from the traditional, the religious and even the norm. If the ceremony is stepping beyond the bounds of the everyday have your gift reflect that. Unique crystal champagne flutes and decanter may become a key part in an Elven ceremony. For in such a ceremony the two drink from the same source (decanter) to signify their dedication to each other. The glasses must be reflective of each person. Pewter is another possibility.
Staying within the crystal theme and participation in the ceremony, a sealable crystal vase/jar/decanter may be appropriate. As commitment ceremonies take on different acts to reflect their love and devotion. During the ceremony each person uses a specially selected coloured sand, to represent themselves, and pours it into the vase/jar/decanter. The sand represents the joining of their two lives and how hard it is to separate themselves.
By contributing to the ceremony in such a way demonstrates your love and support to those making the commitment. Yet if you wish to shy away from the ceremony contribution or lack the closeness to the couple other gifts may be more appropriate.
Before lashing out and spending a fortune consider the couple and their needs. Possibly something more practical is required more urgently though the memory of it may not last as long as a handsome piece of jewelry.
The obvious choices are matching pieces though to be honest it would be best to conform each piece to represent the receiver. Necklaces or plain chains are a lovely gift especially if the necklace reflects the moment. This reflection could be based on the ceremony location, the first meeting location or something specific to the couple. (star signs, guardian angels, identical hobbies). There is no harm in presenting both with a necklace with each one varying slightly.
Rings are not essentially the best choice as the pair will probably have a special one already selected for the day. Bracelets can be a good substitute and a present that may not always be overly expensive. Depending on the tastes of the couple the bracelets may be made of metal (gold, silver, pewter, stainless), leather, rubber or other natural fibres.
Watches can be an ideal choice yet choose what the person would choose for themselves. Never tailor a gift to your own tastes. Watches can be simple faces of time, or more complex. The Australian mint offer watches with faces made from reproduced pennies. They are an ideal gift as the penny's year can reflect the receiver's birthday or other special date. Many years are available and this benefit customizes the gift a little more.
Ultimately it matters not what the gift is as long as thought and purpose was placed within it. A gift that is reflective of their personality, desires or dreams is a gift from the heart. If individualized through engraving or date stamp, the gift remains that much more special. Choose wisely or at least include the receipt so an exchange can be made!
