Assessing sexism in gaming: Is it still a boy's world?

Views of a gaming female!

Yes I'm a female that plays games; and love playing games as long as I'm moving my finger on another button other than just the fire button and I'm not just looking at the backside of some half-naked computer graphic female. Let's face it, games are made by males for males and is now only slowly beginning to change with the likes of the DS coming out and trying to hit the younger females with cute games.

Most males' views are that the older female will like games that are more likely to be a Sim-based game, so why try to create anything new when the Sims are already out? This is not always the case, it's just that when a game is made it's designed mainly by a man, so he thinks from his point of view on how it will entice the boys, it would not even cross his mind about any female player.

The boys will now say it's because more men buy the games, well that's right, you will do because most games you play are designed with you in mind. One example is Lara Croft; did you think they made her the way she is thinking that it would make everyone buy that game? No it was done to make gamers (you men) buy it and most of you did? But as you may enjoy running around looking at her bum, it gets a bit tiresome for many female players.

If I was to have made "Tomb Raider" with a man running about, most of you would not have even considered buying it? Most females would love games, like "Tomb Raider", "GTA" or "Call of Duty" if it was just open to the females a little more, and in "GTA: Vice City" most of the females you come across are prostitutes, that says a lot! Racing games, you get to pick the car and your driver, but most likely you will only be able to choose a male driver.

If the gaming market just added a bit more thought, like letting you choose at the beginning whether you wanted to be a female or male, which alone would encourage more woman to pick up the control and give it a go. I watch a lot of game review programs in which the presentation is usually male biased. If you men want your girlfriends or wives to join in playing some of your male orientated games, then they would more, if they did not see your game character getting into a car and driving around to try and get some female in the car to use her for sex. We can have stronger females characters in games (that can be clothed you know) that are not always the damsels-in-distress or half-naked.

I'm not having a go at you men and I know that there are many female game players out there that do play many of the games I have mentioned above; but sadly not as many as we could have, us females want more than just cute little dogs and cats games Mr Games Makers.
