Courting the undead: Assessing the appeal of zombie movies

I am a zombie movie freak; I can't get enough of them. In fact, when I'm watching one, I'm not even concerned about the storyline. I love the make up, their sluggish gait, and the special fx, or lack there of. A few years ago, George A. Romero came into my life. He is the master of all things zombie. My two favorites would have to be 'Dawn of The Dead' and 'Day of The Dead'. In recent years, a few remakes have been made and I'm still giddy when I watch those as well. And I am officially okay with any zombie remakes as opposed to remakes in general. If anything, the special fx these days add depth to the whole process. However, I would recommend watching the classics first before watching the ones recently made.

I think the main reason why zombie movies are so popular is because of the fear that it generates. Your standard slasher movies doesn't even come close to the raw energy of the undead dead. The scariest part about zombies is that you could lose a loved one in an instant. And the worst part of that is the fact that they still resemble everything that you've known. Imagine having to kill someone you know because they are trying to eat you because you don't exist anymore in their thoughts. Today's gore is slightly different as well. Back in the seventies and eighties, the images of body parts being ripped off was amazing for it's time. Now, there's so much that the special fx can do to heighten that fear of being torn apart. Even the bone crunching and flesh ripping sounds have been creepier.

I can't wait for what the future will bring to this genre. If I were to add something, I'd make them able to jump really high. Or possibly swim. As humans, we can jump if we want and we can swim if we want. Just because your 'dead' doesn't mean you lose those aspects of your human life. But the again, someone would probably make them want to drive. And I have to draw the line there; that puts the human part of them back into full life. As long as they stay in that zombie mode and never gain human thoughts back, anything is possible.

One day I think someone is going to come up with a new set of rules to what zombies can or can't do. And personally, I'm all for it. I've seen vampire movies that have added twists and new rules to the whole bloodsucking trend, why not zombies. Someone might even make them fly somehow and still that would be okay with me, as long as it's done in a cool manner.
