History is something very important for people to learn. Students in elementary schools think about history as something boring, but if the teacher is able to create projects to make them love it things would change for the better. The students would enjoy history and become curious for more information.
We all know how grandparents love to tell stories about themselves and the things they went through. A great history project would be to have the students talk to their grandparents about their past. Choose a story to tell from their past and write about it. Tell the class when their grandparents were born and where they lived. You will find some truly interesting stories. Many grandparents will have fought in wars or were slaves or traveled from foreign countries to make a better life for themselves and their families here in America. I think this would give the elementary students great insite to history.
Discuss which countries had kings and queens and which ones still have them today. Have the students dress the part of the king or queen they choose to be. Have them look into the history of the king or queen chosen and tell the class about it. A boy can find a girl that would pair up with him to be his queen so they can work together on the project. Using visuals is always more effective and it seems to stick with students of elementary level much longer.
Another great history project would be to make a family tree. Look into your past and have a tree made up of as far back as you could find out about. You may be surprised in what you will find. Doing such a project can help the students learn more about themselves along with their family history. Discussing history of America and other parts of the world is not the only thing that there is to talk about. Finding out what happened that brought you in the place that you are in at this moment can help the students see how history can effect them. This will also bring new found appreciation to their family history.
All in all history projects should be a learning experience. We learn from our past to make sure we don't continue to make the same mistakes again and again. We all want a better future for ourselves and our families and learning more about our past and the history of the world can only help understand how to improve our future.
