Wow! Watch out world here I come. This is my first day in school ever. I am five years old and I am in kindergarten. I am a little fearful but this is the most exciting day of my life. My teacher Miss Know-Everything is the prettiest woman I have ever seen. Please don't tell my mother; she is the second prettiest. She is placing a pencil and sheet of paper in front of me and I am to write my name.

That's not too bad, my mother taught me how to write J A C K Oops, I made mistake; my mother is the prettiest woman in the whole world. The teacher is second.

My name is Jack and I am in the first grade. I love writing. I am not too good at it but I know a few words. The teacher asks us to write our names on the paper he has just placed in front of us. He wants to know how many can write their first and last names. We can also add the name of our dog, our cat, our family. After that we can draw a picture of ourselves. I can do that, I have been practicing all my life.

School is no big deal now that I am in the second grade. I love to write and the writing teacher has asked us to write about what we did during the summer. I went to Myrtle Beach with my family and I collected lots of sea shells. Miss Javis has already said I can bring some of them in for show and tell day. Some of the small v shaped shells I suspect were alive when I collected them because they smelled bad by the time we got home. I will wash them first.

I am in the third grade and I am to write about what I did during my vacation time. That is a little boring, we did that last year. My family went back to Myrtle Beach and this year I was careful to not pick up any shells that wiggled. I won't tell about that, I will instead tell of going to a circus and watching the elepants. I know a lot about elephants.

At school there's never a dull moment. In the fourth grade the world gets larger and we learn about other people. I have a new little friend that speaks Chinese. She sits beside me in class and we help each other. For a special writing assignment we are writing about other countries and I chose China. Guess why? I can ask my friend to ask her mother to answer the questions I want to know. We have a week to do our interview. We can write an interview, an essay or just write an article.

In the fifth grade the work is often hard but writing about it helps. Our class is learning how to write as the professionals write. There is this wonderful writing place on the internet called "Stone Soup". All the writing is done by children. Sometimes in class we get to see what the winning writers write and they are good stories.

For my story I am going to pretend I am a homeless old woman who has hit upon an idea for a good meal. The setting is back in the country and the road is one of these long and winding dusty pathways. As she walks along carrying a handled pot with only a stone in it. She stops at each house along the way asks for a tomato for her stone soup. At the second house she asks for an onion, at the third for a cabbage, and so until she gets tired. Then she heads for home. When she washes and assembles all the goodies she has a nice pot of soup.

I know, the story is not original, it was read to me by my mother. So, to be honest about this whole thing of writing, I will tell where I got the idea for writing. It was my inspiration, that is. But my story will be different, just as the old woman is about to take the first spoonful of her soup, she happens to remember the sick and grouchy old man across he way. She fills a bowl for him and takes it to him. Her neighbors were gracioius enough to give to her, and she must likewise share her good fortune.
