We all look forward to a holiday, an excuse to escape to sunnier climes or simply to spend time exploring the treasures closer to home; a break from the tedium of working to earn a living. In this turbulent economic climate this can still be achieved, as long as you set yourself a realistic budget for your holiday and stick to it. Whether you are traveling alone, with friends or with family, the same principles of getting the best value for money will be of utmost importance when booking your holiday. So how can you turn those dreams into a reality?
The first rule is to consider when it is most convenient to take your holiday. Virtually all holiday companies and lettings agencies operate two tariffs; low and high season, depending on the most popular times of year. Those families traveling with school age children will be restricted to the school holiday timetable, with most opting for the longer summer break. Those traveling with pre-school children should ideally avoid school holidays altogether the resorts are likely to be less congested, and considerably quieter.
The next step is to decide which location you wish to travel to. A trip abroad could involve booking flight tickets as hotel accomodation, else you might opt for a package deal. Check your passport renewal dates and whether or not you require Visas before you book trips abroad.
For all holidays it is essential to do your research. Don't rely on the holiday brochure prices, discounts are often available if you shop around. Use the internet to check-out the resort and for alternative tour operators - you will find a huge variation in prices, accomodation options and incentives on offer. Phone hotels directly; there is often room for negotiation. Remember to check that you can arrange any necessary flights before you confirm a hotel booking.
Many companies offer Early Bird' discounts or Free child places' for those clients who book early or special low-price late deals' for very late bookings, requiring you to take a gamble on which hotel you are allocated to. For younger children you could try to obtain a family room rather than having a child occupy an adjacent double room as a single occupant (which will incur surcharges).
The very best deals are usually obtained if you are prepared to book all aspects of your holiday yourself, especially for UK breaks.
