How to survive a zombie Apocalypse

least prohibitively expensive, to "Zombie-proof" your homestead. Don't fool yourself!

Third Priority: Create Your Homestead Defense Plan. Using your perimeter fencing as a start, you need to think in terms of layers (like an onion) and funneling. Each successive layer needs to slow the incoming horde down, and funnel them to where you want then.

Zone 1: 0-20 meters. The house and immediate surroundings. This needs to be clear of concealment and cover. You should have motion-detecting lights on all parts of the house. They should be wired to an interior map so that people inside can see which sector is under attack. Inexpensive CCTV's are also very helpful in identifying friend from foe.

Your house should have barred doors and windows. All access points need to be hardened and "loop-holes" created to allow accurate fire from within. Remember, Zombies aren't the brightest of creatures, but they do have some memories and understand things like door-knobs and simple gates.

Zone 2: 20-40 meters. The rest of the homestead, outbuildings, etc. This is probably the most dangerous zone, simply because there are a lot of places to hide plus people are likely to get lazy and overconfident. Restrict all exterior access points that can't be seen from the house. Put in a few cameras in blind spots and have monitors placed directly across from the entrance; this allows you to get an interior look before you even enter the building completely.

Zone 3 40-100 meters. This is rifle range. If you are part of a group, have one person perched somewhere high up, either in a barn, rooftop or some other secure place. Their job is to keep watch. Rotate every 2-3 hours if you can, it keeps people fresher. Any scoped rifle of medium caliber is adequate for taking head-shots.

Zone 4 100 + meters. This is funnel range. Use the contour of the land to guide the Zombies into your preferred ambush zone. Use things like "tangle-foot" (wires randomly criss-crossed that prevent easy movement) or razor wire.

Armament:

Each member of the group needs to be equipped with a sidearm that is capable of "turning off the lights" at reasonable range. The minimum acceptable caliber is the 9mm Luger. Better still, are the .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .357 and so forth.

Ideally, the group will carry standardized weapons, like a Glock mod 23 (compact handgun in .40 S&W) or a 1911 in .45 ACP.

You NEVER leave the house without your sidearm.

Shotguns. Again, standardization is important in that the group only has to stock one kind
