How to survive a zombie Apocalypse

When the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse finally comes to pass, there are certain things you can do to be prepared and increase your odds of survival. Most everything can be done in one to two years if you really focus on getting your zombie-free ducks in a row.

First Priority: Relocate to where there are likely to be few, if any, Zombies. This means you want to live somewhere with low population density, difficult terrain and arduous weather (for Zombies). Examples are:

Alaska
Upper Midwest
Northwest (excepting for cities like Seattle and Portland)
High Desert (Northern Arizona, most of Utah and Nevada)
Mountains (again, stay away from cities like Denver)

The advantages to places with a lot of snow is that it will be almost impossible for Zombies to make any real headway. Even if they can't feel any pain, the cold will freeze their limbs solid. Nobody's sure if that will actually kill them, but at least you can methodically lop their heads off come spring as the snow melts and you find the poor critters.

Second Priority: Have enough emergency supplies to be able to wait out the worst of the plague. This will be a dark time, and Zombies won't be your only concern. Social collapse is inevitable, and even healthy people will do strange and unpleasant things. Best to let them get eaten.

Take a tip from the Mormons, a one-year supply of food and other consumables is a comfort in times of chaos. Remember to stock up on things like salt, sugar, vinegar and spices. You'll need them to cure and preserve meat when the electricity goes out (it will).

Speaking of electricity, if you have picked your hide-away carefully, you'll have a source of running water nearby. This will allow you to maintain indoor plumbing, running water and... electricity!

Creating a "Micro-Hydro" electric generator isn't very difficult nor expensive. It probably won't power your whole house; no dishwashers or electric water heaters, but it may keep a chest freezer and refrigerator running along with a few lights. Be smart and super-insulate both fridge and freezer with several inches of extra foam. This will help cut down on your power consumption. Replace all your lights with LED's or compact florescent bulbs.

The other thing that having a constant source of electricity does for you is to power your perimeter security system. The first order of business is to fence you place with high-tensile electric fencing. This provides a physical and psychological barrier to the Zombies. It's probably impossible, or at
