TV show reviews: Supernatural

"Saving people, hunting things, the family business..."

When I first saw commercials for Supernatural, I have to admit that I thought the show looked like a dumb idea. Then the first episode I watched scared me so much that I vowed I'd never again turn on the show.

So how did I become such a big fan?

Supernatural is, at heart, the story of a family torn apart by the tragedy of a lost mother. Two young boys are left with a father who becomes more obsessed and distant with the passage of time so the older brother, Dean, becomes the father figure to his younger brother, Sam. The best part of this show is the relationship between the two brothers, played superbly by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, who appear to have a strong real-life rapport as well.

The show is well-written with interesting and intricate plots that deal not only with the family relationships, but also with some frightening urban legends as well. They've covered everything from Bloody Mary and pagan scarecrows to a woman in white, restless spirits, zombies, vampires, shapeshifters, angels and devils.

Another great part of the show is the music they use. One episode, Faith, dealt with a faith healer that Sam found to save his brother, who was on the verge of death after a heart attack caused by an electrical shock. The boys find out that each time a person is saved by this healer someone else dies and they soon learn that they're dealing with a reaper. The musical accompaniment is, of course, "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult. Not every episode can boast such an appropriate musical choice, but some great classic rock has been heard over the beautiful rumble of the shiny black Impala's engine.

The Impala has become something of a character in itself. Dean got the car from his father and takes great pride in caring for his baby - and some of the best moments of the show have included the car.

As you can probably tell, I could go on and on about Supernatural. I've done a complete turnaround from my initial impression of the show and highly recommend that you watch an episode. Just be careful, you might find yourself hooked.
