Human imperfections permit us to have faults and make mistakes. In a perfect world, we would not judge others nor have prejudices. Learning to tolerate and accept one another is something to aspire for. Being human is not only an excuse for our imperfections but also something we all have in common.
We are all imperfect. There are those who have achieved greatness and we hold them in highest regard, yet that does not make them perfect. It makes them brilliant and their achievements can make our world a better place. We respect their work and their accomplishments and contributions. Doctors, scientists, soldiers all contribute to society and create a better world for us to live in.
In my little corner, I am surrounded by an imperfect world, of which I am included in. I have set goals for myself, strive to complete them, yet fall short almost every time. I believe setting the goal is a step in the right direction; if I fail and I have many times, at least I tried.
We make mistakes, we start over. We say something we shouldn't, we apologize. We are only human and in this humanness we fail. This does not mean we don't try; occasionally we may even do something that merits a reward or an honor. These are the times we can be proud of. Making the effort is worth it every time. Shakespeare said, "To err is human, to forgive, divine." This is a difficult but achievable ambition.
The birth of a healthy child is as close to perfection as we may ever get. Seeing that infant for the first time is an overwhelming, enlightening experience of which nothing in life can compare to. Yes, that moment in time, is absolutely perfect.
Raising a family is trial and error. We learn from our mistakes and hope for the best. We would love to have all the answers to those tough questions. For instance, why do children die? Why do bad things happen to good people? Someday, we hope to understand these things, but for now, accepting life; both good and bad is our reality.
Accepting the fact that we are all flawed, we have blemishes and are defective in our humanness is the struggle we must all face. We are all in this together; we all have one thing in common, if nothing else, our imperfections. We share this with each and every person we meet.
One day, these questions will be answered. Someday, when we stand before the only One who is perfect, who loves us when we fail, who loves us when we hurt each other, who loves us regardless of our imperfections. Then and only then, will we understand what perfection is.
