New movies you really should see

Some say Hollywood has lost its way. Others say that Hollywood is simply feeding an eager audience exactly what the audience desires. Still others claim that the MPAA is a useless, mis-guided group of people who have no real clue as to what is inappropriate and that their ratings are based on an obscure set of arbitrary values which seems to change based on the film's producers.

While all of these claims are arguable, the truth is that there are still plenty of good movies popping up in theaters around the country. Some of these movies have made it to the video store by now, but that's not a problem. Here's a list of five relatively recent movies that you really should see. I've put them in descending order, so make sure you at least see #1!

#5 I am Legend
Will Smith truly has come a long way from being the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the rap world. Shrugging off terrible films like The Legend of Bagger Vance and Wild Wild West, this guy has consistently been the single biggest draw to movies of any individual celebrity during recent years.

And it's a good thing, too. Smith is pretty much the only cast member in I am Legend, the newest movie version of the excellent novella by Richard Matheson. Sure, late in the movie we get a woman and a kid, but other than a dog and a bunchy of well-done creatures, Smith has to carry this movie on his sculpted bod. Oh, and with his impressive acting chops too, of course.

The thing about I am Legend is that it is completely engaging. Smith portrays his character as on the edge of total despair. When tragedy befalls his best friend, those final moments are deeply moving. Thus, I am Legend is a must see simply because one guy does the work for the whole movie.

But it's also a fun action flick that has something to say about relationships, humanity's stewardship over the Earth, and sacrifice. With seamless effects, a remarkable performance, and spectacular source material, this movie is a must see. But read the book AFTER you see the flick. You'll be less offended by the liberties taken by the movie.

#4 Cloverfield
A strange, massive creature whose origin is totally glossed over suddenly begins a deadly rampage across New York City. The story unfolds from the point of view of... a camera. No, really, we see the action throught they Handy-Cam that one of the characters is carrying throughout the action.

All nausea aside (the jitters get to some people), this movie is a milestone in cinematic history. Sure, we saw some of this in The Blair
