SIMPLE TIPS TO PREVENT A DUI
First and foremost, DON"T DRINK AND DRIVE. By far the most important rule to remember. If you are going to go out and have a few drinks, be sure to use good judgment.
Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind before you leave your house. This is not a complete list but rather a guideline to follow. There are many different ways to prevent a DUI.
1. HAVE A DESIGNATED DRIVER. A very important one to remember. This way everyone who is riding in the same car will be assured that someone sober will be able to give them a ride home. By appointing a designated driver in advance, there is no risk of being stranded where you are and it lowers your chances of getting behind the wheel because you could not find a ride home.
2. DON'T MIX YOUR DRINKS. If you are drinking beer, stay with beer. If you are drinking mixed drinks, stick with mixed drinks. You tend to get drunker faster if you mix the two.
3. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. A good rule of thumb is for every alcoholic drink you have had; follow it up with a glass of water. This way you will always have a drink in your hand but it will only be alcohol 50% of the time. This will also help in preventing you from getting sick.
4. REMEMBER TO EAT. Have something in your stomach before you drink. It helps to soak up some of the alcohol. Eating throughout the night will help you as well.
5. PACE YOURSELF. It is not a competition. You don't have to be the first one drunk. If you get drunk quick, chances are you will be more likely to get behind the wheel drunk.
6. STOP DRINKING AT LEAST 2 HOURS BEFORE YOU PLAN ON DRIVING. Your body needs time for the affects of alcohol to wear off. Those 2 hours may be the difference between getting a DUI and not getting a DUI.
7. KEEP IN MIND THAT DRUNK DRIVING KILLS. Innocent lives are lost every day because someone thought they were "O.K" to drive after they have been drinking. Drunk driving does not only affect you, it affects everyone involved and even those not directly involved.
8. IF YOU DRINK AND DRIVE, YOU WILL GO TO JAIL. Drunk driving is not something the police let you get off with a warning for. It is a serious crime. On top of jail time you will also have to pay some pretty hefty fines.
If you think you have had too much to drive, or even if you think that there may be a possibility that you have, I suggest that you hand your keys to someone you trust. Why risk it? Is it REALLY worth it?
