There are several factors which will influence your choice between buying a desktop computer and a laptop. The choice between these two different machines is entirely up to you and should be carefully thought through before you head out to spend your hard earned money, especially if you are a student or on a low budget.
The first and most important thing to think about is what you want out of your machine. The obvious differences between a desktop and a laptop is that the former is quick, easy to customise and can hold a lot of information, while the latter is lighter, portable and usually can be brought with the same specifications as a desktop.
How you use the machine will affect which one you choose. If you want something that will be reliable and easily upgraded, then a desktop computer is definitely your ideal choice. They can be upgraded with new parts and you can change pretty much the entire insides of a computer if you know how with little problems. Laptops however are not very easy to upgrade and change as all their components are encased inside a plastic shell which is hard to open, and once inside it is even harder to remove and replace components for the laptop.
If you are using any graphical programs such as 3D modelling packages, art programs or even some games then a laptop might not run them as smoothly as a desktop computer, as this can be tailored to run the programs you need. I personally have had this problem with my laptop, as it has not been able to run the 3D modelling packages I have needed to use for my Masters degree, which has meant I have had trouble with my work. In previous years I have had a desktop which I upgraded as I needed to with a new graphics card and added more RAM to help it run smoother.
If, however, you want a machine that can be taken between your home and work, then a laptop is by far the superior choice. Laptops are ideal if you travel and need to access documents on the train, most trains have wireless internet access too so you can go online while on the way to work. Laptops are great for writing and documents too. They are designed to be quick and easy to use but without the high specifications that a desktop computer has.
Also there is the factor of price. A custom computer, or ready made desktop, can cost a lot more than a laptop, especially if it is a new machine with all the new upgraded components included in the price. A computer is going to cost a lot whether or not it is a laptop or desktop. Your best bet is to look around on online websites and in computer shops to find the best deal. Always try and buy the best that you can afford regardless of what type you buy. Buying a computer is an investment; if you buy a good quality new computer then you won't have to buy the next generation of computers for a few years.
It really depends on your own personal needs as to which computer type is best suited to you. Laptops are ideal for mobility and are brilliant for working on the go. Whereas desktops are good for more long term projects and for running graphically demanding programs. Think carefully about what you want from your machine before buying and if you are ever unsure about a purchase ask someone you know or a shop assistant. There is always someone who is happy to help you choose the best machine for you!
