What are allergies?
Allergies are symptoms that result from the body's reaction to a foreign substance commonly referred to as an allergen. An allergen can be a substance such as dust, pollen, pet dander or even food.
Types of allergies
There are several different types of allergies including seasonal allergies, food allergies and drug allergies. Many people suffer from seasonal allergies during the spring and summer months.
Seasonal allergies
Seasonal allergies such as those commonly referred to as hay fever can make allergy sufferers miserable. The medical term for such allergies is allergic rhinitis. These allergies may be triggered by pollen, freshly cut grass, humidity or other allergens. People who suffer from seasonal allergies often find that their allergies flare up on especially humid or rainy days.
Symptoms
The symptoms of seasonal allergies are usually characterized by sneezing, coughing, watery itchy eyes, runny nose and nasal congestion.
Treatment
Treatment of seasonal allergies may consist of over-the-counter or prescription antihistamine based medications to alleviate allergy symptoms. Nasal spray may also be used. Your physician may recommend allergy shots. If you suffer from seasonal allergies you should consult with your physician for the proper course of treatment.
Many allergy sufferers suffer from allergies all year long. Chronic allergies may be due to dust, pet dander, smoking or other allergens. Symptoms and treatment are usually the same as with seasonal allergies. Your physician may feel that a desensitization program is best. This is done through injections of a small amount of the offending allergen. Your physician will determine the best course of action to control your allergy symptoms.
If the allergy is triggered by pet hair or smoking it may be in your best interest to eliminate the allergen. If this is not possible there are steps you can take to help eliminate as much of the offending substance as possible. Vacuum regularly to remove pet hair. Keep pets off of furniture and out of rooms such as your bedroom. Ask smokers to step outside rather than smoking in the house. Change furnace filters when needed. It may also help to get a clean air purifier.
Although not as common as many other types of allergies there are people who have adverse reactions to certain foods. A few common foods that may cause an allergic reaction include eggs, milk, milk products, yams, chocolate and various types of nuts such as peanuts.
