10 ways to use decorative window film

If you remember window film from decades ago, it's time to look again. Once a contact-paper style product that looked just as cheap as it cost, decorative window films have evolved into a sophisticated home product that is now high on looks. The easy-to-apply films are available in hundreds of styles, with almost as many uses. Here are ten ideas for your home, whether your needs are practical or aesthetic.

1) Create privacy.

Some rooms in a house need privacy, but a bright look is essential. Privacy film is just the thing for hot tub rooms or intimate luncheons on a sun porch, and you can still see the view. Frosted films allow sunlight to pass through, while insuring that your private moments stay private.

2) Block an unsightly view.

Some sights are ones you wish you didn't have to see. Whether it's the sunbathing neighbor or the ugly high-rise, decorative window films allow you to view a scene you choose to see rather than the one that's there. Why not transform the view into an Italian orchard? It's your choice.

3) Protect your furnishings.

Window films filter UV rays, which can have devastating fading effects over time. Draperies, upholstery, paint, rugs and carpets can suffer visible damage in as little as a year. If you are a collector of art or books, window film can help preserve the value of your important items. The cost of the film is almost nothing compared to what it could save you in replacing your valuable pieces.

4) Keep down cooling bills.

The sun doesn't just damage your furniture, it can also damage your pocketbook. The majority of the heat that enters your house in the summer comes in through the windows. By blocking those rays with window film, you can enjoy their light without a high air conditioning bill.

5) Stay safe.

When glass breaks, you can lose more than just the glass panel. Flying shards and debris are a hazard for yourself, your children, and your pets. Window films keep glass pieces from scattering when a pane breaks. If you live in an area where storms are frequent, adding safety film to your windows could prevent accidents.

6) Create a sanctuary.

When visiting tourist spots, people marvel at the stained glass they see in cathedrals and old buildings, but never consider that they could have the same breathtaking effect at home. Expensive colored glass is unnecessary. You already have the glass; you just need the color. Stained glass window films are available in medieval window styles and venetian glass, as well as turn-of-the-century
