Planning a family summer vacation on a budget

It is also possible to enjoy a vacation without breaking the bank, provided you are willing to be creative and flexible.

Where to go is a decision that depends on your budget and the ages/number of children you are taking with you. The younger the children are, the more simple the vacation plans should be. Not only are young children less pleased with sudden changes in routine, parents of young children are less seasoned in traveling as a family. For the most part, the smaller the budget, the more local your destination should realistically be.

Using a computer is a great help in completing the research needed to have a well thought out plan for your vacation and compare prices. If the children are school age, they can help too. Type in the name of your destination and "Chamber of Commerce." You will get tons of info on everything from where to stay, to a calender of events.

Be flexible about the date of your vacation. Many places do not consider the Season to begin until the Fourth of July. Prior to that date hotel rooms are offered at a discount.

Another way to economize is to consider camping. The cost of a campsite is always more economical then a hotel stay. Many camps have a web site that explain the amenities they
offer. Campgrounds range in the amount and type of social activities, beginning with none to having many, varied activities throughout the day.

Even if you don't think you are ready to rough it in a tent, you can still camp. Many camp grounds offer cabins or campers. The more rustic the accommodations, the more economical the price.

One of the easiest ways to stretch your budget is on food. Children are creatures of habits, most are not that interested in trying exotic new food. They will happily eat the same PBJ sandwich everyday, just like at home. Pack some of the staples of your kitchen. It is best not to assume that the local store, will stock the same type of peanut butter or cracker that your children insist on. By packing your breakfast and lunch, you will save a great deal of money and you can plan to splurge on dinners, a bit. Encourage you children to try some new foods, during these "special" dinners.

Finally, once your vacation is planned, help the children set up a chore chart to earn money and explain that they are working on earning their spending money for the trip. This money will be given to them once they are on vacation and will be the only money they will receive for "extras." If they are older, encourage them to offer their services to an elderly relative or neighbor. This is one more great way to include the children in planning and provides a natural lesson in economics.
