I am a Soldier that is currently stationed in Afghanistan. I have already spent a year in Iraq. So this subject matter I feel probably hits closer to home for me than most.
The national outcry after 9/11 was tremendous. It seemed the entire nation wanted something done about this horrendous act. So we went to war. The yellow ribbons came out, and the nation rallied to the event. The statement, "I support the troops." was plastered on windows and vehicles and indeed the nation did support the troops. Unfortunately that sentiment wouldn't last. In our fast food, order it over night, mindset we forgot that not all problems can be solved in a day.
The statement that I personally hear now is, "I support the troops, but". I support the troops but I don't agree with the decisions the President is making. I support the troops but I don't believe in war. I support the troops but I don't agree with what they are doing.
I don't know if the public at large is aware, but your outcry during and soon after 9/11 is the reason I am currently here. I have no choice in the matter. I go fight my Nation's wars where and when I am told to.
I am curious when, as a nation, we decided that we weren't going to finish what we start. It appears from where my dusty boots are standing that we will only agree to a quick fix for our problems. Some problems take time, and creating worse imbalances in the world at large will only make this volatile planet more unstable. If we run out on these countries and fail to help then gain some kind of stability, we are only hurting ourselves worse in the end.
I am truly glad that our nation feels secure enough to be at the mall, because the malls in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq are being blown up everyday by suicide bombers. I am truly glad that I have a part in defending those shopping malls for you. I wonder what would happen if we the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines that fight for this great nation came up with our own slogan. "This We Defend, but".
This is just one Soldiers personal opinion. Sleep well tonight because my brothers, sisters and I are watching over you.
