Tips for increasing reading comprehension for college students

Some college students face some difficulties in getting the meaning of poems, articles, and they seek for some advice to improve their reading comprehension. There are some skills which I think useful.

First of all, try to find out the purpose of the writer. Each article is written with a purpose, which may tell you a story, or tell you some instructions or the other things. Therefore, if you can get the purpose of the article, you can easily understand the whole piece of it. Pay attention to the first sentence and the end sentence of each paragraph, which convey the information of the purpose and main idea of the article. If there is plenty of time, try to read the articles first with only the key sentences. This is a kind of skimming.

Second, practice reading every day. Choose two articles a day. One is for you to get the general idea. You can use speed reading skills to read it. The other is for you to read it carefully. Use all kind of skills related to reading. Try to get the main idea of the piece of article, and predict the outcomes by following the facts or opinions of the writer. And, try to understand each sentence exactly. If necessary, try to analyze some sentence for a better understanding. If you have time, try to recite one or two paragraphs of the article.

Third, learn to use the reading skills to find the clues of it, and find the causes and reasons of the result. Try to find the relationship between them with the conclusion. There must be clues for the conclusion. Try to detect them out.

Fourth, try to practice intensive and extensive reading skills every day, when you read the two selected article. When you select articles, don't make them too easy or too difficult for you to understand. The articles must be suitable for you to read. The improvement of comprehension is a gradual procedure, so don't jump for the fruits of a good reading comprehension. Do it step by step.

In this way, you can have your reading comprehension improved day after day, and it is not difficult for you to read and understand difficult articles sooner or later. You will be satisfied with your reading ability. I am sure of it, and I think that you have the full confidence, too.
