You can select various photographs and ask them to write about the picture. Tell a story around the photo and allow them to be funny or serious. Anything is good as long as they are willing to write. If you see a student that isn't happy about the choices of pictures then ask them to draw a picture and write about it. Don't give a definite amount of words that they need to meet. They should feel free about writing a little or a lot. Some will be more expressive than others but either way most of the students should find this creative writing project fun.
Finally, the students can write about a dream or nightmare that they recently had. Most times these dreams will be exaggerated since most minds seem to forget the majority of the dream within 30 minutes after waking up, but it doesn't matter. Being creative is the idea and everyone's dreams are always bizarre and creative.
These projects should be able to keep most students interested in writing and will definitely enhance their skills. Writing out their feelings, opinions, and ideas are always effective in creating a writing project. Elementary school students love to voice what they think and love to be recognized for they had to say. Even if what they had to say is written, being rewarded for writing it down in a creative style will always make them want to do more. Giving the students incentive is important and it makes them want to create, create, create.
