Why soccer is good for kids

Soccer is my favorite sport. Growing up in an Italian family helped cultivate my love for the sport. As such, since I was five years old I have been playing soccer. No other sport is played on such a world wide scale as is soccer. Additionally, every four years the greatest sports tournament in the world is played. This tournament is the World Cup and is the greatest sports spectacle to grace the eyes of humans since the foundation of the sport.

As stated, I have been playing soccer since I was five years old. I grew up in the United States and as such, the sport was not as popular as other well known American sports, but this does not mean that soccer was or is an inferior sport. In fact, there are many reasons why soccer is a great sport for kids to learn.

First and most importantly, soccer is a very active sport. Kids will engage in highly aerobic exercises and play. As you may know, there is a lot of running involved in the playing of soccer. As such, regardless of the position that your child may play (with the exception of goalkeeper) he/she will constantly be on the move. This is great way for your child to stay in shape and participate in a social activity.

Even though the goalkeeper may not do as much running as will the other positions on a soccer team, the goalkeeper position is still very active because goalkeeper must be very nimble and acrobatic. As such, just because a goalkeeper does not run as much, this does not mean that this position is not active.

In addition to the health benefits, playing soccer may be a way for your child to meet and make new friends. As such, playing soccer will help your child engage in social activities that will make him/her develop important social skills that could benefit him/her later in life. It is always a great thing for your child to make new friends and if he/she plays soccer, he/she may be able to do so outside of the boundaries of his/her school.

Another advantage of playing soccer is that your child will learn teamwork. Knowing how to work well with a team is a great way for your child to begin to develop such teamwork abilities and will help your child later in life. Additionally, working with a team helps instill important lessons of cooperation and sharing.

These are just some of the benefits that children can obtain by playing soccer. If your child is not enrolled in a sport or is currently enrolled in another sport, consider enrolling him/her on a soccer team.
