army life than Full Metal Jacket. Just as Bill Murray and Harold Ramis said this to the Army recruiter in the film, I actually said this to my recruiter when I enlisted (before the days of don't ask don't tell). I said it without even thinking, and luckily he laughed and told me he had seen the movie as well. It was ultimately the only thing the jackass didn't lie about.
5. "Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! And it's not over now." (John Belushi in Animal House).
John Belushi's rant after the guys from Delta House are expelled is classic. I hate to admit it, but this quote has become so ingrained in my mind over the past thirty years that I have to stop sometimes and remind myself that the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Regardless, it's still the line I use most often when I'm in a group that has become demoralized about their chance of success (in business, sports, politics, or relationships) and it never fails to lift our morale.
6. "I'm too old for this s*t." (Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon).
I laughed at this line when I first heard it, but it's only been as many years have passed that I've come to really appreciate it. I use it more and more often, whether engaged in a physical activity that used to be simple and no longer is, or when having to call up patience I no longer have. And it always garners approving nods from those around me over 40.
7. "Well, who says relationships have to last forever?" (Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise).
This certainly isn't a movie quote most people remember, but it's one that's stayed with me for a long time. The premise of the film is that two strangers have more of a relationship in a 12-hour period than most of us have in years together. Since seeing the film, I've often wondered if we wouldn't enjoy each moment with a person more if we hadn't been sold the idea that we'd have a lifetime with them, which we almost never do.
8. "Cinderella story. Outta nowhere. A former greenskeeper, now, about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac... It's in the hole!" (Bill Murray in Caddyshack).
Bill Murray says this as he's whacking flowers with a scythe. This was a movie quote I used every single time I hit a golf ball. I eventually gave up golf, but not the line. It fits in nearly every situation you'll find yourself in where you're dreaming of success against long odds. And saying it in the voice Murray used is guaranteed to lift your spirits.
9. "So I've spent
