Quoting movies is an American pastime. Some quotes become a part of the national lexicon and continue on even when most people couldn't say what movie they came from. For example, many people would recognize the line "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore," but how many know it's from the film "Network"?
Movie quotes can also be significant in our lives as individuals for a number of reasons. Perhaps a specific line reminds you of your first love, or of a particularly difficult period or a happy memory from our youth. Or maybe they've become the thing you always say in a particular situation, forgetting over time that it's not you own original though.
The following 10 movie quotes have stayed with me, for very different reasons, since the first time I heard them:
1. "Think ya used enough dynamite there, Butch?" (Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid).
This was a great quote in a film filled with great quote. Said after the gang blows up an entire train car trying to blow open a safe, it's the line I always use whenever I'm in a situation where we went a little overboard trying to accomplish a simple task. And most would admit that anytime you get two or more guys together trying to do something, the potential for that is very high.
2. "Fredo, you're my older brother, and I love you. But don't ever take sides with anyone against the Family again. Ever." (Al Pacino in The Godfather).
Michael Corleone says this memorable line to Fredo after his brother sided with Moe Greene in Las Vegas. Looking back, it's hard to believe that a movie quote could summarize what loyalty to family meant more than what I learned in school or church, but this one did for me. No matter how young or old you are, or how much you may fight as a family, family always comes first. Always.
3. "Morons. I've got morons on my team." (Strother Martin in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid).
Yet another great movie quote from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and one I use far too frequently. Strother Martin said this as Butch and Sundance were looking for bandits on the way down the mountain to pick up the company payroll, before they had any money. Over the years my employees have come to expect me to say it whenever a project goes wrong, so much so that they will often say it before I can.
4. "No, we're not homosexual, but we are willing to learn." (Harold Ramis in Stripes).
A great movie quote from a comedy that was actually
