Company profiles: World Championship Wrestling

World Championship Wrestling was at one time the flagship professional wrestling promotion and long-time rival of the World Wrestling Entertainment Empire. WCW started its venture into the world of global media in the year of 1988 after billionaire Ted Turner purchased the regional specific National Wrestling Alliance promotion ran in affiliation with Jim Crocket promotions. It was from here that Turner put forth the name World Championship Wrestling and began acting as the main investor and main money man into the future of this former NWA promotion and what would soon become the biggest wrestling promotion on the planet.

While Turner acted as the money man; he played little role in the promotion other than providing the necessary funds needed in order to hire talent, both onscreen and off-screen, in order to profit from it. The main brains behind the success of World Championship Wrestling was Eric Bischoff; the man largely responsible for almost every major aspect of WCW. Bischoff started in the promotion as a backstage onscreen announcer, putting forth the occasional ideas, but eventually took on the role as executive producer and president, being in charge of every aspect of onscreen entertainment put forth in the promotion. He was basically the brain for the business that Turner did not have. Turner had the money, Bischoff had the brains. Put two and two together and you have a future, a success in the making.

Following the general success of Crocket Promotions' National Wrestling Alliance; the WCW chose not to close the doors and restart later, but continue straight on in their own vision. They finished off major feuds and angles and then started to build their own reputation in their own image. Major pay per view events such as Clash of the Champions and Starrcade still remained, as did major superstars such as Sting, Ric Flair, Ricky steamboat and Lex Luger. At the time, there was little to no noticeable difference other than the banner in which the promotion was under.

It remained the same up until the year of 1995 in early September when WCW started running its own television show directly against that of the WWF's television show, Monday night RAW. WCW began to run Monday Nitro directly head to head against RAW in the attempt to create a ratings war and make WCW the most well known and popular promotion, a spot which the WWF had held even in the days of the NWA.
