Finding your perfect match is a matter of knowing yourself. Take a personal inventory to sort out what you are all about. Once you know that, you are better able to recognize your perfect match when he or she comes along.
What are the characteristics that define you?
If you had to name your values, what would they be?
Financial success? Family? Physical activity or sports? Excitement or tranquility? There are plenty more, but give some thought to actually naming the characteristics or aspects of you that really give you your identity.
Given 4 hours of truly free time, how would you spend it? Don't make a list here. Try to name three or four ways you would spend this time if you could.
Given $100, or some other set amount of money, how would you spend this money?
Given the choice, would you rather spend time with one other person, three other people, or a group of 5-7 like-minded people?
Answering these questions is a beginning to describe what you are about. Although your perfect match need not have the exact same characteristics, certainly you want to spend time with someone whose characteristics do not conflict with yours or block you from being who you are.
Research shows that the successful matches are between people with a similar background. It is hard to ignore differences in age, race, religious belief, ethnic background, and economic differences. Certainly there are people who have cleared this hurdle and are as happy as can be, but statistically, finding and spending time with a person with at least similar background increases your chances of a successful match.
Whether you buy this similar background concept or not, you should at least give some thought to what your honest responses are to the questions of whether you can truly envision yourself with a person with a far different background. After all, the image we have of the perfect date or perfect mate are highly influenced by our visions of what we expect that happy outcome to be like.
At this point, you have maybe narrowed the field. You have given thought to who you are and what is important to you. Next, you acknowledged the influence of your background and have decided what kinds of people you may have ruled out in your consideration of the perfect match.
It is time to move on to where you might find that person who is in your vision of the future. The face and the image may be fuzzy, but we can start to better tune in that image of the perfect date.
