Pierced ears, for most people, are a place to hang jewelry, part of the adorning process. My pierced ears had been nothing but trouble from the time I had them done at the age of 14. Since I was allergic anyway, I always assumed I had to be cautious about the type of material in the earrings I chose. Since then, I have learned that sensitive ears have special needs. When I take care of my ears, I can wear a larger variety of jewelry.
Cleanliness is always a priority. When I remove my earrings, I wash the lobes with a gentle anti-bacterial liquid. I also wipe down the earring post and back. It takes a minute and has made a real difference. My ears itch less when I wear costume earrings. I have observed that even 14 karat gold earrings made my ears swell if I didn't keep the earring and ear very clean. After that, I made sure to be scrupulously well-scrubbed.
I consider three things when I am buying earrings: type of metal that will come in contact with the ear, air movement, and weight.
I look closely at the earring's construction. The type of metal is very important: 14 karat gold and non-nickel (hypoallergenic) metal is less reactionary than other metals. The bar that goes through the ear should be made of these metals. The back of the earring that touches the ear should also be of quality metal, or it can cause irritation.
Air movement is almost as important as cleaniness when it comes to wearing earrings. If the earring is so large it covers the whole ear area, moisture will develop between the earring and the ear, causing irritation. I rarely buy earrings with big, close-fiting fronts and tight post backs. Dangling earrings with hooks allow air movement around the ear.
Weight is a factor in keeping the ear comfortable. If the earring is too large and heavy, it irritates the earring hole. The skin also stretches under the weight of a big earring, leaving a slit.
When I dress up and use earrings, I want them to be flattering. And I want them to be effortless while I am wearing them. By paying attention to cleanliness, type of earring and weight, I can choose comfortable earrings that look good.
