In the idiom of the teenage world "drama" means an excessively emotional conflict between people. Unlike this newly coined popular association with this word, the truth is dramatic training can be a real asset to teens.
Dramatic training can help teens land jobs, as well as keep jobs, because of the skills that this experience brings to the work place.
There are several skills that teens learn through dramatic training that employers look for when hiring new employees.
1) Confidence speaking in from of groups and with the public. Some teens do not work out as employees simply because they have not developed the proper speaking skills yet. Through dramatic training, teens are able to project their voices so the public can hear them as well as speaking with excellent vocal variety which makes their voices pleasant to the ear of the public.
2) Putting on the show. Teens that have dramatic training know how to put on a good show. Even if they are tired, have had a bad day or don't feel well, teens with dramatic training know how to put on an appearance that will not reflect these negative feelings. They can easily cover-up any negative feelings.
3) Outgoing personalities. Teens that have had experience in the theater usually develop out going personalities. They are not afraid to speak to people nor will they shake with fear having to take on order on an intercom system. These outgoing experiences allow them to be an excellent employee.
4) Hard work and dependability. There is a reason there is the quote about the theater, "The show must go on." Teens that have been involved with theater know that there are deadlines and responsibilities. If they aren't willing to do their part, then the director will find someone who will. This sense of dependability carries over to the workplace too.
5)Sense of touch and movement. Dramatic training provides teens with movement skills. They are not afraid to touch people and they also understand economy of movement as well as not being underfoot to someone. These teens are not afraid to shake someone's hand and have a good sense of their physical stage, which may be behind the cash register or taking someone's order.
6)Ingenuity. Being involved in theater incorporates more than acting. It also involves lights, sound, costumes, props and set. Often times theatrical performances are done on a shoestring so it requires the ability to "McGyver" things up. Teens involved in theater learn to solve problems. Good problem solving skills are an asset to employers. This creativity is invaluable.
7) Improvise. Acting allows teens to develop skills for adaptation. If a fellow actor has a problem with a line or the phone doesn't ring on time, the actor must think on his or her feet and improvise until things evolves and the problem is solved. This skill is invaluable to an employer. These teens are able to visit with a customer until their "fries" are done or will be able to adapt to whatever job responsibilities an employer decides to give them.
Dramatic training creates a well-rounded teen who is personable, dedicated and creative. These experiences and personal qualities make excellent employees and employers love to hire them due to these qualifications.
