Making the smart choice of food during a diet depends on the kind of diet. The only diet that I know of that accomplishes both loosing weight and that you actually stay healthy is something called the weight watcher program. In this program you are certain to get all the nutrition you need to stay healthy and you can even eat sugar and drink a glass of wine from time to time. One of the ideas is to pick the right time of day to eat for instance bread. I believe they say you cannot eat bread after 12 o'clock as it is too hard to get through the system. At dinner you eat a lot of vegetables (and you can actually make some wonderful meal from vegetables). This makes your system work hard. Sometimes you can actually just sit on a chair and start sweating because your body is working hard to digest all the vegetables.
Anyway, the point is if you follow a program like this you are allowed to eat a little bit of anything everyday but it has to be the right amount according to the plan. If you eat more than two pieces of pie one day you have to make up for it the next. This way the smart choice is a choice of food that is on the plan. Your craving for more cake must be postponed to the next day and the day after.
This has worked for me and I am certain it will work for you too.
