Should a woman be president?

Should a woman be president of the U.S.? It's sad that this is even a discussion for debate. In other parts of the world countries have been lead by women many times before. We all, no matter how oblivious to world politics, know that Britain had Margaret Thatcher for Prime Minister. Countries that have been run by monarchies have had Queens and Consorts, as Britain has now, for centuries. A more appropriate question would seem to be, why hasn't there been a woman president yet?

In cocktail conversation and at the water cooler you may hear anti-female presidency refrains ranging from hormones, menopause, and emotions to a host of other arguments against the whole idea. It's a sad commentary on our American society.

Ask any employee, or simply look around your neighborhood. Other than the occasional stay at home Dad, women are terrific at multitasking. Emergencies are what we thrive on. Time deadlines, instant decisions, thoughtful cooperation are all practiced regularly in the playgrounds and other "mom" hangouts around the country.

I've heard it said that women make the best bosses; the best doctors, nurses and other caregivers; the best teachers; and several other "best" positions. I've heard this out of the mouthes of men, but rarely will you hear a man say a woman would make the best president, or even should be president. I'm sure there are women who agree with those men too. Why is this?

Are we just resistant to the idea? Are we a nation of people who just can't accept what hasn't gone before? I'm not sure about that. I think it's one of those ideas whose time came a long time ago, it's just that no woman until now has come so close to the opportunity - for whatever reason.

A woman should be president. A woman possesses qualities that could bring things to the position that have long been lacking. Women are tough and strong and I don't mean in the physical sense. We have powers of theory and logic that have heretofore been untested in the political arena at the highest level of achievement and the time has come. Women have reached the pinnacle of many careers, but not in politics. The time has come. It's time for the U.S. to poke through the cobwebs and join the rest of the world in recognizing the merits of female leadership.
