Reflections: Learning to live within our means and plan for tomorrow

Life with Financial Woes!

Many people are suffering from stress because of financial woes. We are living in a nuke age where everything is wanted now and tomorrow may be too late.

As a child, I could remember my granny, Mary, saying, "Child, It is not how much you make, it is what you do with what you make" that determines your future. I've since instilled that in my brain and have financially survived accordingly. Our young people today are so driven by what they see on television that they don't try anymore in school or put much meaning to education. To them survival is how quickly they can make money the "easy" way.

Another story my Granny told was, and I quote, "I never see a dead man in a Hearse with a U-haul or a Ryder truck attached with house, car, or any other personal belongings. " When we leave this life we leave it almost naked as when we came into it.

There is a serious plight these days for money. We are living lifestyles as if tomorrow may never come. Personally speaking, tomorrow may never come, but we still need to strike a balance somewhere. Living above our means is not the answer, and the answer is not just for today.

This country has dwindled from land of plenty to land of few. There was a time when rich people would put furniture on the curb and poor people would be able to nicely furnish their homes and apartments. These days, people are holding on to everything they have much longer. Cars are being driven until the fender falls off. People are wearing their hats until they become frayed and the designers are catching on by making them this way. Those who are financially conscious are holding on to their dollars until they become worn and faded.

The key to our financial freedom may be to put away one-tenth of all income to our Master's Will, one-tenth in a place where it generates additional income over time, and the rest to livelihood. Many of us need to eat less and walk more. Exercise our body and mind by walking wherever possible, tending to our each others needs, laughing, and letting go of our doubts and fears.

It is never easy to think from scratch, because ever since we were born everything seem to have fallen off trees. Children get everything they desire for Christmas as long as parents worked. So we grow up with the mentality of always wanting and having things around us. We crave for so much that we don't know or have not learned how to enjoy life just because we have life. Our enjoyment is always tied to something that we have around us rather than what we are as a people.
