Reducing employee turnover does not need a budget increase. These are simple changes that can be made. The outcome you will have will be a strong team, wonderful communication, new ideas, and your employees will want to come to work with you.
This will work because people want to succeed. The best time to start is during the hiring process. If this isn't possible because the employees are already there or you do not take part in the hiring process that is fine you will still make a huge difference. During the hiring process show respect and honesty, give the opportunity for the team to interact with the potential employee. Allow your team to give feedback and make note of their feedback. Now you are not only teaching the potential employee that you value your team but you show your team that you need them.
Set clear consistent guidelines for everyone, including you, to follow. If there is a guideline that you are unable to follow or you will not be able to enforce then please DO NOT set it for the team. After the guidelines are set speak with the team about the new guidelines then allow them time to themselves to discuss inform them when you will go over the guidelines again to discuss them. Hold yourself to the time. When you speak with the staff allow them to alter the guidelines if it makes sense for the company.
Show a new team member a copy of their goals and inform them you would like to personalize their goals. Set a date and time in about 3 weeks if the employee already understands the position, if they do not allow more time. For employees who are already established with your team speak of the current goals and set a date in about a week to personalize the goals.
Let everyone know when someone exceeds a goal. Praise employees daily with a specific example. When you set the example of thanking and praising your employees will begin to do so for each other. Remember the more specific the deed the better your employee will feel.
The main thing you need to remember is to show each person that comes into your office with respect and expect the people you have surrounded yourself with to follow. The team wants to go home and brag about what you said to them... so give your team the chance. Mostly though when you make your staff a team they will want to be included and they will not exclude themselves from your company.
