The American Psychiatric Association 3% - 7% of school age children (4% of adolescents) have symptoms of ADHD. Approximately 60% of these children will carry their symptoms into adulthood. Both sexes are affected with ADHD. Males out number females 4:1. Many experts believe that ADHD is under diagnosed in females.
Key points: 1. unexpected changes in daily routine are upsetting for a child with ADHD. 2. Your child is no intentionally disobeying your instructions. 3. Remove as many distractions as possible when your child is doing a task especially homework. The child's school performance may drop due to incomplete assignments for homework or because they can bot concentrate and be still during school hours due to the ADHD if they are not on medication to help with these problems. The child's self-esteem may suffer because it takes them longer to learn things and they feel inadequate because of it. The child may not develop organizational skills to help them be successful in life because their parents don't know how to teach them these skills needed for organization. Set family rules so the child can understand them enough to follow them. Make it simple, list them and post them where the child can see them and read them when needed. Establish daily routines for your child. Daily routines is good for children with and without ADHD. Use pictures to help with learning as a tool for some kids with ADHD pictures are far better because there is a visual aid. Use a timer for a Child with ADHD to do tasks. Set the timer for say 15 minutes for homework time if it is a short assignment, or for say this is how long before bedtime. Use a checklist for tasks that the child has to do daily, example: brush teeth before bed, put pajamas on, have homework done, pick up toys, set the table, and so on. Use praise, praise lets a child know they have done something right and have done it well.
There is several different types of medications available to help with ADHD and you should talk to your doctor about what is right for your child. There is controversy over the use of Ritalin to help control ADHD.
My son has been diagnosed with ADHD and has been on medication for 2 years now. WE have tried three different medications on him. First was Ritalin and I had his doctor try something else after six months because of my concerns surrounding the media reports that Ritalin causes heart problems in children. So his doctor tried him on Adderall next and that didn't seem to do the job
