so scary after all.
The theme of the movie is family; the importance of the unit as a whole as well as individual members. One gets the sense while watching that Verne had assumed the role as caretaker and leader for his little clan, but with the introduction of RJ each member gets their moment to shine.
With cooperation, and a lot of manipulation by RJ, the little family learns a new means of survival, i.e. stealing from the suburbanites who have inhabited the majority of what was once their environment.
Things go so well they make an instant enemy of Gladys, a human who is probably the most obsessive compulsive character in animated history. She responds to their thievery by hiring an over confident exterminator, voiced by Thomas Hayden Church.
As Verne realizes the seriousness of the situation, he grows more and more impatient with the unwanted presence of the family's newest member.
It also doesn't help that his position in the family unit has been continually overthrown by RJ. As the family grows more and more dependent on RJ and less and less on him, he begins to feel replaced.
With clever dialogue and enough silliness to keep the laughter going, deeper themes like family loyalty underscore what is truly a deeply layered story with lovable, charming characters you'll want to see again and again.
