Poetry: Escape

His flight aroused the chickens
before the dawn broke through the morn.
Squawking and a flyin' and kickin'
in the loving golden straw.

If he hadn't been so clumsy
he'd have skipped out without her knowin',
but he tripped over the bucket
and caught his shirt on the barn door.

This set the cows to mooin'
and the pigeons to be cooin'
and before he made it out
her daddy's lights flickered too.

About then sweet Georgi Green,
rose from her tousled sleep
and the straw was in her
curly hair and blushing on her cheek.

So he swung back for a moment
for one last taste of true love
as she crooked her little finger
as she lay there in the straw.

In an instance he ran for cover
hoping for a quick escape just
as her daddy made it to his car
to say "Son, what are ya doin'?

By then there was no redemption
after all he had been sinnin'
so he told her pa the truth that night
and in the mornin' they was weddin'.
