Concepts of marriage

We have been married for almost a year now, everyday I sit down to write my articles my wife always wants to know what I am writing about. Yes I do tell her and today she asked me to do something I never thought she would ask me to do, write an article about marriage.

For me to be able to fully articulate the concepts of marriage I will have to first define marriage for what I believe it to be. Marriage, for me is a union of two individuals coming together to be one. I do believe that the two individuals come in as whole and they still become one. Many people believe that two halves come together and become one completing each other, i totally disagree. Something that is half is not complete, when you come in the relationship for someone to complete you, you have just put a burden on the other party to be what you think they should be to you not for them to be an individual.

Marriage bring the two individuals come together and they still maintain their individuality yet working on a common goal and one purpose called marriage. Both Parties bring in themselves with an understanding that they are still different yet they can achieve a common purpose. I love golf, my wife hates it, she loves shopping an I get agitated when I'm shopping, she can surf the Internet for hours and yet after 30mins I want to watch the TV. We are different yet we get along and we love spending time together. We have other common interests which we spend time doing together and that makes our relationship as strong as it is. We can do our individual things and still get along, marriage is not a substitute for individuality.

Marriage seems complex because two individuals with different styles, different perspectives on certain life issues have to be one and work on one goal together. Some marriages are based on common interests, some on how good the two make each other feel and some are based on friendship and some on all of the above yet they are all marriages. I believe that a marriage can also be based on biblical principals coupled with the everyday common values we know supported by friendship, which is what I believe holds my marriage.

Marriage is also a commitment, it is a statement to say that one has decided and made a choice to be with one lover to build a family and to grow old together. It is also a covering for what every problems the other has, a safe place where you can be encouraged to grow and be the best you want to be. Marriage does not change some but it facilitates that
