Console reviews: The Nintendo Wii

Console Reviews: The Nintendo Wii

I'm somewhat slow to experiment with new technology. I just had high speed Internet installed last December. Up until recently, I was still playing with my Super Nintendo and enjoying it. However, the press about the Nintendo Wii caught my attention, and I decided to investigate it. When I found out that you had to get off the couch and move to play this console, I knew this was the game system for me.

You see, the Nintendo Wii costs about 250 dollars, and comes with a sports game disc called Wii Sports and one wireless remote and a Nunchuck. You can have up to four remotes for a system. Wii Sports has tennis, baseball, bowling, boxing, and golf. What makes this game so much fun and challenging is you don't just press a button; you have to move the wireless remote and your body in a certain way. For instance, when you are playing the tennis game, you have to swing the remote as if it is a tennis racket to hit the ball. This game is not the only game that requires more than pressing the right button at the right time; Nintendo offers quite a few games for the Wii that makes you get off the couch and get moving.

But you say I still enjoy my Nintendo 64 or Gamecube games. Well guess what-on the Wii, you can actually download games from older game systems, such as the Gamecube, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, and even Nintendo NES! Just make sure that your Wii is connected to the Internet. They also sell a controller at an additional cost so that you can play the older games with ease.

Not only does the Wii offer great games and enjoyment, you can also have fun with it without inserting a game disc. There is a section called the Mii Channel, where you can actually create digital images of people or yourself. You can also download the Check Out Mii Channel, where you can enter your created Miis in contests, judge other Miis, and even place Miis that you admire in your system. In addition, there is a News Channel where you read about all the current events and a Weather Channel that shows your local weather conditions.

As you can observe, the Nintendo Wii is more than just mindless entertainment, it is something that the whole family can enjoy. It is simple enough for a small child, and it is even gaining popularity with senior citizens. For the serious gamer, you can download and play older games from the past. With all the versatility this system offers, the Nintendo Wii is a game console that will endure for years to come.
