Tips for raising successful children

We all know there are no guarantees. Becoming a parent is the greatest responsibility we can accept and being a good parent involves a great deal of trial and error. We can do our very best and still make mistakes. I will not pretend to be an authority on parenting so accept these tips from a mom who gave it her best.

*Patience

There is nothing more stressful than being a parent. You will be sleep deprived and exhausted. No one sent you home with a manual so the greatest virtue at this time is patience. Have patience with your child and with your spouse. You are both learning together so give each other praise along the way.

Praise your child every chance you get and they will always know how proud you are.

*Be Involved

Whether you stay at home and work or work outside the home, find a way to be a part of your child's life. There are many programs for toddlers at park districts or libraries that will allow you to spend time together. Find a play group for moms and tots, the important thing is to be together.

As the children begin school, try and participate in every program possible. Get to know the teachers and volunteer what ever time you are able.

*Just say No!

This is not as easy as it sounds. Saying no is one of the most difficult words a parent can use. Don't be afraid to say no. Always trust your own instinct and let your judgment depend on that. Also, be firm; when you are looking into that adorable little face and want so desperately to give in, stay firm. Be consistent in your discipline and they will learn their limits.

*Respect

Let your child express them self openly and honestly with you. Allow them the opportunity to have a fair argument. This will teach compromise and show them respect works both ways. If there is a disagreement, you need to respect their opinion as well.

*Listen

Always listen to your child. There will be times when it is difficult to just listen and not advise, however, they need a sounding board just like adults do. Knowing they can talk to you and not be interrupted, will give them listening skills too.

*Trust

This is very difficult as a parent. We want to give our children room to grow and yet at the same time we want to know all their business. Until they give you reason not to trust, allow them some space and they will learn independence.

*Let go

This is without a doubt, the hardest thing to do as a parent. We spend years holding them so close and protecting them. Suddenly, they are adults making choices of their own and we have to trust that we have provided them with the tools they need to be successful adults.

*Pray

We can't do this alone. Ask for guidance.

It truly does take a village to raise a successful child. Network with other parents along the way and ask for advice. We can look to our family and friends and learn from them. No one said it would be easy. Always trust your own heart.

Be the best role model you can be. Trust and Respect work both ways. Show your child that caring for others builds character and a sense of community. Admit your mistakes and they will be able to admit to you when they have done wrong. They will be assured of your constant love and forgiveness.

If they contribute to society, are decent and kind people, then they have grown to be very successful adults. These children are now our future.
