Suddenly a huge knife appears out of nowhere, at the end of a grotesque fist in someone's hand who appears to have died a long time ago. The darkened movie theater reverberates with screams and gasps from the audience, as many female members of the audience dunk their heads into their boyfriends' chests.

Shocking movie moments, usually happen in horror movies, but can happen in dark comedies or dramas, or even a movie that is going along at full romp, when something so out of the ordinary happens the entire audience stops breathing for a full minute while they adjust to what just happened.

It's great fun to see a movie that has shocking moments, because it makes the film a thrill to watch. When we walk out of the theater we know what only happens in the movies, stays in the movies and won't be happening in our real lives.

Here are some great shocking movie moments:

Every time the huge shark in the movie " Jaws" leapt out of the water is a true cinematic shocking moment. Can you imagine seeing this movie in 3-D? Almost every time someone was shown swimming from underwater camera angles in " Jaws", movie- goers were sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for the next victim to be torn to bloody pieces.

The Shower scene in the movie "Psycho" was so scary because you knew something terrible was going to happen to Janet Leigh's character. Movie watchers were just waiting for something terrible to happen; only we didn't expect the son to be dressed as his Mother holding the murderous knife.

Almost every scene with the character Regan, (Linda Blair) in the movie "The Exorcist" that takes place in her bedroom is without a doubt shockingly creepy. This sweet innocent girl turns into a demonic old man that spews green vomit, and whose head spins around on her body. When the bed slowly rises up off the floor, while the Priest is trying to exorcise the demon out is unparalleled in spine tingling madness.

In the first "Godfather" movie, it was shocking enough when Michael Corleone's young bride was blown up in a car. But, the most shocking moment in the Godfather movie was when the film producer Jack Woltz wakes up in his bed to find something wet and stinky on the end of his bed. Little do any of us know it his prized thoroughbreds severed head lying at his feet. That's the part of the movie I walked out on, because it was getting too gross for me.

In the movie, "Mean Girls", it was so shocking to see the lead mean girl, Regina get hit by a school bus. It was a completely unexpected thing to have happen, that I for one sat there in stunned silence, until my husband said, "Did she just get hit by a bus?"

"The Terminator" movies were shocking because the T-1000 has everything happen to him and he just picks himself up and comes back to life, in his quest to get rid of John Connor, Edward Furlong). He walks through fire, mends holes put in his body by gunshots, and repeated stabbings, and runs away from life-threatening traffic accidents. Moviegoers watching " The Terminator" probably were wondering how the film's characters could get rid of this robot that has more lives than Arnold Schwarzenegger's character a Cyborg.

Shocking movie moments make for some of the best movies ever created. With movies such as "The Alien", "The Sixth Sense", and "The Silence of the Lambs" a movie goer can look forward to be shocked for years to come.
