to join in matrimony and share in the same benefits as married heterosexual couples, a majority of them believe that homosexuals are morally corrupt and criminally prone; absolutely undeserving of the same basic rights that every American receives as their birthright.
It all stems from the idea of "family values"; a term usually bantered about most fervently by politicians who are later outed as adulterers, alcoholics, wife beaters, or in some form or another corrupt. Many of these politicians honestly believe that allowing gays the right to marry and share in marital benefits will corrupt the "family values" that they believe are the core of the solid, American family. In fact, "family values" are in this world of divorce and child abuse almost nearly as mythical as purple people-eaters.
Taking a look at "family values", we find that in one of the largest in-depth studies of American attitudes, a national survey of 5,700 adults found that almost 30% of divorced adults cited physical abuse as the reason for their divorce. 89% of children witness abuse at home. (from TAMU's Sexual Violence Education & Support: Relationship Violence Information) In some states, 63% of the children in jail for murder are there for the killing of an abusive parent. (from About.com's "Domestic Violence Statistics - Children and Teens"). Something tells me that disallowing gays from marrying is going to have little to no effect on the already downward spiral of "family values".
Sen. Frist also, at the time, said "absolutely" that he was all for banning gay marriages; his main fear, naturally, being that we'd be ruining "family values" - thereby reinstating the merit-less belief that the traditional man-woman marriage is the only way to keep this country pure and good.
I'm not quite sure what the deal is with keeping marriage "sacred" anyway when, in 1997, the likelihood of new marriages ending in divorce was at 43%; a number that continues to grow. Marriage isn't exactly sacred anymore, so why all this hype about keeping marriage for only the straight people? I can't see where they've done all that wonderful a job with it.
World magazine culture critic, Gene Edward Veith, believes that the homosexual drive to gain marital benefits is destroying the institution of marriage itself as people abandon commitment and embrace the "gay" notion of serial monogamy with "sex partners."' (from Concerned Women of America's "Sexual Orientation & American Culture"). Ouch. At first glance, the statement
