Christ's parable in which he stated: "the eye is the lamp of the body, if the eyes are clear your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. Therefor if the light that is in your body is darkness how great is that darkness." is wisdom applicable to a beings psychology.
When data is perceived by the mind through one or more of it's faculties either the information is disregarded or added to a mental construction. The data causes the production of other thoughts in relation to it. A consistent flood of negative images or sound can have the result of causing a disorganized mind to produce negative thought (opinion, miss-understanding, perverted imagination). A persons psychology can be extremely difficult to alter once values and beliefs become valued in themselves and acted upon habitually.
Using a psychologist as an external apparatus to understand ones self is a valuable but poor substitute for a philosophical understanding and re-ordering of ones self. A great place to begin an understanding of self through "looking within" (insight) would be to embrace one of humanities great spiritual systems and by studying philosophy. I chose Christianity for myself and it works for me. Buddhism and Stoicism are also worthy of being adopted as systems of belief.
The benefit of stoicism is that it is a philosophy that has to be lived. While all religion has to be acted upon, stoicism is acted upon in every moment of the Stoics life. Constant awareness of the pull of pleasure towards a thing and push of pain away from a thing while remaining indifferent to either causes the stoic to become an incredibly efficient being when at work. When at rest the stoic is always perfectly happy with it's own mind, not needing anything external for pleasure. The downside of stoicism is that the sense of understanding that irrational beings share with one another disappears and the stoic becomes isolated from them by it's perfectly ordered mind. A true stoic understands other beings better then they do themselves.
