There are many conflicting opinions about various forms of "Alternative Therapies". The fact is, there is no single form of intervention that works for everybody. I do believe that Magnetic therapy, among a variety of other alternative treatments, has the potential to be beneficial.

The human body is made up of electrical impulses, and a variety of minerals flow through our blood streams. Without the electrical impulses in our bodies, our heart wouldn't beat, our nerves wouldn't carry any signals to our muscles to move, and our nerve receptors wouldn't carry sensations of pain, pressure, or touch back to the brain for interpretation. When a person is considered "brain dead", it is because there are no longer measureable electrical impulses or signals flowing from the brain. Electrical currents and fields are inherently part of the structure if the human body. Electrical currents and electrical fields are also, as a rule of physics, are surrounded by magnetic fields.

Because electrical fields and magnetic fields are interlinked, a change in one field can facilitate change in the other. Heart patients with pacemakers are often instructed to stay away from strong magnetic force fields, as there can be an interaction that may prove harmful to a patient. I have been able to witness this first hand. A dear friend of mine has a child with heart difficulties, and has had a pacemaker since she was a toddler. Whenever I would be on the phone with my friend and her daughter got too close to the cordless phone, the phone would drop out for a very short period. Fortunately her daughter was not completely dependent on the pacemaker, and the strength of the pacemaker's electrical impulses was stronger than that of the cordless phone. It was obvious though, that there was a strong interaction between the fields, which caused a temporary change in the function of the fields themselves.

If this is the case, than there is absolutely the potential that magnetic therapy can have an impact on one's health. The problem comes in when it is claimed to be the new "magical end all-be all" of cures. There is no such thing a cookie cutter recipe for curing OR causing any type of pain, illness, or bodily damage. Because no human body is exactly the same as another (with the possible exception of identical twins, although even differing personalities can be indicative of differences in neurological function), no single intervention or treatment will work for everybody. Thus, while magnetic therapy might be the "magical cure" for one person, it may not have any type of noticeable impact on another.

I believe that ALL therapeutic methodologies, traditional or alternative, eastern or western, homeopathic or allopathic, have the POTENTIAL to impact a person's health and well being. But that doesn't necessarily mean that it will have a measurable impact. Healthcare providers have to develop relationships with their patients, keep open communication about and track changes in symptomatology, and keep up to date about available options for treatment. Then, they must be able to either use those treatment options effectively and ethically, or they must admit that no one person has all of the answers, and refer the client to someone who can use the intervention effectively and ethically. Buying a magnetic bracelet out of a mail order catalogue will not cure your ailments. Consulting a professional educated in the theory and practice of using magnetic therapy or any other type of specialized alternative therapy has the potential to be a life-altering experience.
