Maybe it has become difficult to realize it, but I personally think our society is rather controlled by technology in various forms and that this control is not always positive for us, in all the world.
We are not at the level predicted by George Orwell (1903-1950) in its book "1984", published in the far 1949, but technology has surely limited our privacy and changed our life-style and not only with the purpose of pursuing the illegal activities of some thieves or terrorists. The examples are many and the "Big Brother" has already born and we must try to not allow its growth until becoming its slaves.
- Cell-phones.
Personally, I hate cell-phones and I don't use them also because I've noticed they have changed people's habits, in and outside their houses; people talk of their own businesses in public everywhere they are, they can't get out without the cell-phone in their hand, they profit of it to control the actions and movements of friends, partners and relatives, at least, with too frequent calls. Furthermore, the dialogs on the cell-phone can be easily listened by police and even by private persons by means of some Internet sites that allow to track the position of the cell-phone we want to spy and its user.
Cell-phones are even potentially dangerous, for the radiations they emit at the contact with our ears and head and for the habit of driving the car while using it.
Many car accidents are today related to the distraction caused to drivers by their talks at the cell-phone, so that its use when we drive our car is forbidden in many Countries today; the problem is that these rules are not very respected.
- Satellites.
Also satellites allow the control from the space of whatever thing larger than 1 m or less, moving on the Earth surface. So, every kind of vehicle and single persons or groups can be seen and followed by satellites, although the main use of the latter is (still) for telecommunications, meteorology and for military surveillance on wide regions. Our mass-media (TV, Internet, journals) that have a fundamental role in our society for the circulation of information, depend totally on the efficiency of satellite communications (also the Internet is controlled by satellites), while all journals today are available on-line and, in many cases, only in this version.
- Video-cameras.
These electronic eyes have been placed along many streets, in the so-called "sensible points", near banks, shops, offices, stations, meeting points and so on to reveal the authors
