Cats are animals that mark their territory and communicate with each other through their scents. With this in mind it should be noted that getting rid of cat urine is hard to do. Additionally, while people may not smell it anymore, the animal often will, making a list of options working together as the best option. This is because the animal who urinated on the carpet may very well do it again in the same spot, or other animals will mark it as well.
Clean the Spot.
Start by cleaning the spot. You will want to do this by mopping it up well (yes, I know it is gross, but it needs to be done). Then you will want to take a soft bristled scrub brush and scrub the carpet with vinegar water. This won't smell good at first, but will counter act the smell of the urine and remove it from the carpet.
Pet Odor Sprays.
There are a number of pet odor sprays. Some are labeled for use on messes and others are not. Most however will do a great job taking care of the needs that you have for this particular issue. You will want to look for one that eliminates odors by enzymes. This product will actually consume the urine that is left behind by general cleaning. Simply spray this product on till the area is very moist. It is best to do this before bed so you wake up with a dry spot. This will take away the rest of the urine that you might be able to smell.
Carpet Clean.
With the vinegar and the enzyme spray your cat will not be able to smell the urine, in most cases. However, it isn't a bad idea to clean your carpets really well after this issue. You can buy a small Bissell Carpet cleaner for about $50. This wonderful machine can clean the carpets through all sorts of messes and keep your carpet looking nice (I love mine!). Use this to clean the carpets really well.
Top with a Freshening Spray.
You can use Fabreeze to freshen the carpet or you can make your own spray. To make your own get a spray bottle (a new one and not a used one). Fill 3/4 of the way with water and 1/4 of the way with vodka or another white high alcohol content liquor. Add to this 10 drops of your favorite essence oil. Shake well between each use. Spray the carpets with either very well right before bed. It will smell like Fabreeze or alcohol. In the morning though it will be fresh and dry with only the scents left behind!
While it is important to do a really good job at getting rid of cat urine, it can be done and it can be done well. It is important that you at least use the pet odor eliminating spray, but the other steps will make for a very good clean up job. Your cat will not even notice that he or she made a mess and won't be repeating it!
