When I was dating my boyfriend (now husband)he had a little sister that was about 13 years old. She was the cutest kid and very naive. When her grandmother died I was concerned about how Susie would take the passing, and how she would handle the funeral. This was to be her first.
She didn't speak of the funeral but I could see she was nervous. I tried to prepare her for what she was about to see at the wake but she told me not to worry about it. When we entered the funeral home the large group of people were blocking her immediate view of the casket holding her grandma. We made our way to the front and when she finally was able to see, she just stood there. I let her pause to gather her thoughts. As she slowly turned to face me, she said in a whisper, "You can tell Mommy picked out the casket. Look how well it matches the dining room ".
When my son was three years old his favorite show on TV was Alvin and the Chipmunks. He watched it every chance he could. He could quote the script word for word if you asked him about a particular episode.
One day we were in the supermarket and it was very crowded. As we waited on the line to check out I kept my son occupied with one of his little story books that we took for just this purpose. When we were finished looking at it I said, "Mommy loves you so much, Bobby." He looked me straight in the face and said matter of factually, "Oh yeah...is that why you left me on a stranger's doorstep?" I was stunned as people turned to stare at me. "That didn't really happen!", I stuttered. "That's from Alvin and the Chipmunks!" I don't know if they believed me or not but at least they didn't call the cops!
On another day my son was with me when I went to the doctor's office. I was pregnant and we were going to hear the baby's heartbeat for the first time. I was so excited. It was a strong steady beat. The doctor turned to Bobby and said, "What do you think of that, Bobby?" My son was sitting in a chair and obviously quite bored. He crossed his arms and looked up at the doctor. His answer, "I'm NOT going to pay a lot for this muffler!" Apparently he had heard the Midas Muffler commercial that morning!
I have to admit, my son loved TV. He would even put on a cartoon and then use his color-forms on the screen so that he could enhance the show. He's 24 years old now and works in Manhattan in the film industry. I would never have predicted that...or could I?
