phone, Rosie was speaking with the police once again. "Hey," the dispatcher said, "Weren't you the lady who called yesterday?"
"Yup, that's me," said Rosie, her voice trembling, "and I'm in fear for my life - they seem to be stalking me! Here's their tag..." and she read it off carefully.
Rosie said it was almost magical to see how quickly a police car showed up to pull that red truck over. She was too scared to stop, but the hispanic woman also pulled over behind the police car, apparently so that she could explain what had happened.
"But," Rosie told me laughingly that night, "Guess what? As I drove away, I could still see what was happening in my rearview mirror. The police car pulled up behind the red truck, the door opened, and a big, burly black cop got out!"
However, those boys would no more respect that policeman than they respected Rosie. What they did was a hate crime. What will happen as a result of it, I don't know. But no matter what the punishment is, is it at all likely that it will change what they feel?
And how is it that mere boys have already become so violently racist? And, even more importantly, is this something that is growing in the youth of America? Are they an anomaly or merely representative of something ugly that is growing in the dark?
