US elections 2008: Why Republicans may feel sorry for Hillary Clinton

I don't think that Hillary Clinton needs anyone's sympathy but I do think that she has been the most maligned candidate in this entire race. Don't believe me? Well, then, let's look at some of the facts.

Going all the way back to her husband's presidency there were murmurs from insiders, journalists and others about the possibility of her running for president some day. This actually was no surprise to anyone because from her earliest years she aspired to be someone special. She worked hard, she had great ideas, she had compassion and she earned everything she had the old fashioned way. She worked for it. That may surprise some people who insist that she got many of her assets through corruption. When asked to be specific no one seems to be able to name a single incident where she got something she wanted through coercion, bribery or other scandal.

When she moved to New York and filed as a candidate for New York Senator, skeptics and Clinton haters raised a huge ruckus and insisted she had ulterior motives. In reality she did nothing different from hundreds of other politicians who carpetbag for the sake of taking advantage of empty congressional seats. Many political careers have been launched exactly the same way. Nothing illegal or immoral about that. Instead what she did was shrewd and calculated, both signs of an intelligent player in the game of politics. I would rather she be able to think like that than to have someone in office who can't think at all.

Moving on to her political career in the Senate she was a champion for the underdog, stood up for the rights of the dispossessed, challenged big corporations to put their money where their mouth was and advocated a more sane relationship with our foreign allies. In short she was a model senator, never slept around or had sex with subordinates, didn't solicit for sexual favors from anyone, stood by her word, was truthful and honest, knew how to play hardball and stand up for her convictions and took responsibility for her mistakes. If only one third of the senators in the Congress had acted like her our country would be much better off than it is today. Additionally, I think she is an attractive woman and I make no apologies for saying that.

Contrast that with the darling of the press, Barack Obama. He's handsome, has a great smile and a beautiful wife, knows how to relate to a crowd and gives flowery speeches laced with emotion and idealism. However, when you look at his record
