A persons metabolism can be defined as the bodies ability to burn calories at differing rates. A person with a high metabolism will burn more calories then a person with a slow metabolism while performing the same movements or while resting. The body burns calories when at rest. In physiology a calorie is defined as the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of a kg of water by 1 degree C. All of the bodies internal processes from the operation of the heart, blinking, and breathing, all require energy. Muscle tissue requires the most calories to maintain and move while fat, because it is inert mass, requires no calories to maintain.
The two best way to increase your metabolism without the use of any external substances is to increase the amount of muscle tissue on your body. This can be achieved through progressive weight training.
The body also burns calories when digesting food. Although it may seem counter intuitive, eating 5-7 small meals a day will actually increase your metabolism because each meal will cause your body to begin the digestion process which will burn energy. It has also been shown that the bodies metabolism will be increased 15 times more when eating a high protein meal in relation to meals consisting of only carbs or fat. It is best to have a well balanced ratio of macro-nutrients (carbs/protein/fat) in your diet. 5-7 small meals containing 30 grams carbs 15-20 grams protein, and 15-20 grams fat will speed up your bodies metabolism enormously. Your body requires an enormous amount of water to operate at it's peek efficiency. Your body looses ten cups of water a day, two from breathing, two from sweating, and 6 from waste removal. It is possible to get two cups back from consuming food but that still leaves eight cups of water that you need to put back in to your system. If you are feeling lethargic most of the time it is probably due to the lack of water you are consuming.
Consulting with a doctor, personal trainer, and nutritionist are the best ways to begin playing around with your bodies internal systems and physiology.
