Her birthday? Valentine's Day? Anniversary? Or no special occasion? And you're scratching your head figuring out how to get that perfect gift for your special lady. The most important consideration-and the most difficult part-is to find what she would really like, a true token of your undying affection and love. Most women don't like to ask for what they really want, making this gift thing even more challenging.

Expensive gifts can be appealing, but the best presents reflect the old adage. "It's the thought that counts." An elegant dinner at the city's best restaurant with candles, a scenic view, fawning wait staff, and a $$$$wine list is always a pleaser-when you know she'll enjoy what's on the menu. A more affordable option, requiring more thought, is to make dinner at home. Candles, wine, her favorite foods. Convince a friend in a tuxedo shirt to serve as a waiter. If you can't cook, try take out from her favorite place. An even more romantic option is a "bed picnic."

How about a massage for her? And a couples massage is even so-o-o much more relaxing and romantic-and expensive. For an economical option, investigate the local massage school, at about 50% to 70% of the cost at the spa.

For an avid reader, try a book on her favorite area of interest from anthropology to zebras, or by her favorite author. While you're at the bookstore, include another book-of love poems or romantic getaway ideas. For an economical alternative, purchase a blank book and fill it, in your own handwriting, with romantic quotations.

For the gourmet cook, find a great cookbook or purchase a basket of gourmet foods-including a bottle of wine. Be sure to include heart-shaped chocolates and a romantic love note in your own handwriting. An economic alternative that will make her heart skip a beat is to have her mother handwrite out favorite family recipes that you use to make a recipe scrapbook. Keep blank pages for future recipes that you can add together. A special touch might be placing copies of favorite family photos in the recipe scrapbook.

Does she maintain a special collection? Find a teddy bear or stuffed frog with a heart or romantic saying for her collection.

As a last resort, you can never go wrong gifting one or more of "The Big Five."
