A painter is inspired to put what he sees of feels on canvas and it becomes a beautiful form of art. Poetry is another form of art. The poet puts what they see, hear and feel on paper.
I believe a poet sees, feels and hears differently than other people. A tree standing stripped bare of it's leaves or an old barn left deserted to decay, are perceived by most people as just that;but to the poet they are things of beauty, which must be put into words.A poet examines their inner most feelings and puts them on paper, anger, fear, and compassion for others.Writers of fiction put their imaginations down on paper, so does a poet. Sometimes their imaginations take them to dark places, other times to places of beauty and delight. If a poet has suffered a loss or wrong they usually write a poem to express feelings they might otherwise hold inside.Feelings of sadness, happiness and humor will be expressed in words. These words touch other people, who can identify with the poets words;then there are those who cannot identify with the words of a poem. I guess it's like preferring classical music to country of rock music. Like a painter or song writer, a poet is a unique person, with the world, people and their inner being as the source. Their inspiration is a gift given by God to put their art on paper in the form of poetic words.
