of Gears of War. Nathan can only carry two weapons at a time, a pistol and a rifle class gun, which the player can swap round with any other weapons that the enemies drop in the environment. Ammo can be retrieved from the ground or from defeat opponents. You can aim the gun using a cross hair that appears when you hold down one of the shoulder buttons, and use cover to stop Nathan from dying too quickly. There is no health bar, like Gears of War; the player has to instead recharge health from behind cover. The screen loses saturation when Nathan is shot, and when it turns especially black and white Nathan is close to death. This effect can hurt your eyes if you play for too long though.
There are some parts in the game which involve on-the-rails shooting from the back of a jeep, which are handled well and are enjoyable to play. There are also some levels involving a jet ski where you have to control where the vehicle is going and shoot down anything in your path as well as any bad guys trying to shoot you from their positions on the ground.
There are treasures that you can collect during the course of the game, which do not affect the gameplay as such but allow you to unlock bonus features such as "making of" videos, concept art and extra costumes etc. Some treasures are rewarded for how skilled your gameplay is and others can be found lying about in the levels.
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is fun to play and the only real bad thing about it is the length of the game. It was too short and can be completed by a skilled player in about eight hours; it took me around sixteen hours to reach the end on easy mode. The cutscenes are beautifully done, the characters are very well designed and a joy to watch. You really care about what happens to them and what happens in the end, you want to know if Nathan finds his treasure or not. The gameplay is fun and the shooting element was good enough for even beginners to get the hang of.
The best part of the game by far is the complete twist half way through. It changes the story and the way you play very quickly and without any warning. It was one of the best moments I've personally had while playing a game. But I won't tell you about the twist, that'll ruin it! The best way to approach this game is by knowing little about it in regards to the story and being delightfully surprised by it.
This game is fantastic and has definitely swayed me towards buying a Playstation 3. Naughty Dog has proved that the next generation of games don't have to be sports games or dreary war games about the end of the world. They can be fun and have characters that are enjoyable to play as. A real gem of a game.
