Video game reviews: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS3)

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is Naughty Dogs latest offering to the gaming world and was released in 2007. The game is stunning and is quite literally one of the best reasons why you should own a Playstation 3, and if you don't, it's a great excuse to borrow a friend's.

The game begins with Nathan Drake, who is supposedly a descendant of the famous explorer, Sir Francis Drake, and is currently in the middle of the ocean, in a boat, attempting to recover the supposed coffin of his late ancestor using co-ordinates engraved on the inside of a ring he has had since childhood. A journalist paid to find out about historical artefacts, Elena Fisher, tags along with him to film the moment when he opens the coffin. The whole endeavour was paid for by the company she works for, and Nathan promises her that she'll get her story.

They manage to find the coffin and pull it up to the surface, but when it's opened there's no body inside, which Nate finds amusing but Elena is not pleased at all. What is inside the coffin instead is a diary by Sir Francis Drake himself. Nathan explains that he believed that Sir Francis Drake faked his death so that he could embark on another hunt for treasure without anyone chasing after him, and that the diary was proof of this.

Elena demands to get footage of the book but Nate refuses, at which point a group of Spanish pirates attacks their boat, halting all conversation. After a brief fire fight, the two are rescued by Nathan's friend and mentor, Victor Sullivan, also known as Sully. They land safely away from the pirates on a local island, and while Elena makes a call to her bosses, Sully convinces Nate to leave her there and look for the treasure themselves. They abandon her on the island and head off in search of El Dorado, the fabled city of gold which Sir Francis Drake had faked his death to find.

The gameplay is a pleasant mix of over the shoulder, third person shooting and platforming. You control Nathan Drake and guide him on his treasure hunt through various jungle environments. The gameplay is very fluid and not too difficult in regards to the platforming. The controls feel very natural and you can make Nathan jump, swim, climb, grab onto ledges, and swing from vines and ropes in a manner very similar to Tomb Raider. The animation is what makes Nathan's movements especially believable; he isn't always very elegant and moves in a way that makes him feel like a real person.

The shooting side of things is handled well and in a style reminiscent
